General recommendations for SQL Server Hardware

When obtaining hardware for a EEE server, the following is a “general” recommendation on how the server should be configured. This is a general recommendation only and your requirements may differ depending on the number of stores you have and the volume of data being retained.

Some general recommendations:

Server Software:

• Windows Server 2008 R2 standard edition x64 - licence type to be recommended by your Microsoft licensing specialist

• SQL Server 2008 R2 standard edition x64 "per-processor licence model"

Server Hardware:

• Single, quad-core Intel processor

• Minimum 16GB RAM, recommend 32GB

• Disk system is very important, ideally separate volumes:

o RAID 1 volume for O/S and applications

o RAID 1 volume for SQL server transaction log

o RAID 10 volume for SQL data (could be RAID 5 to reduce cost slightly)

o Somewhere to store backups short-term before they are moved to separate media

Note - you must purchase SQL Server licensed to be accessed by all your HO users AND allow a licence for every till in every store - AND accessed in real time by the web site if applicable. This is why you must buy a per-processor licence - and this why you should have a single, multi-core CPU (only need to buy one processor licence this way).See Also:
